Each year, LKTYP serves over 80,000 students and teachers, working closely with local school boards to ensure every play we present has strong connections to the NEW Ontario Curriculum and to Character Development.
We offer a wide variety of teaching resources designed to support you in the classroom, including professional development, teacher/student workshops, comprehensive study guides, subsidized programmes, and Teacher Preview evenings.
A comprehensive Study Guide for each production is available online. The Guide is designed to highlight learning expectations, provide information about the content and form of the play, stimulate pre- and post-show discussion, and provide drama and music activities to complement your curriculum. You can access the Study Guides for present productions as they become available on our website, and/or consult the past season’s guides.
Teacher Preview Evenings
At special Teacher Preview evenings, we
offer complimentary tickets to teachers to provide a sneak-peek at selected productions
throughout the season. The evening includes a
panel discussion with members of the creative
team and experts in the field. Join us for a
great night of superb theatre, fascinating
discussion and light refreshments.
Please note that the panel discussion and refreshments are prior to the 7pm performance start time. Doors open at 5:30pm; reception. Space is limited; be sure to book early by calling 416.862.2222.
Q & A Sessions and Tools of the Trade Presentations
Following most performances there is a Question and Answer session or a Tools of the Trade presentation to deepen students’ understanding of the subject of the play or the dramatic process. The Q & A gives your students an opportunity to ask the actors and/or the Educational Services staff about the production. Tools of the Trade demonstrates how costume, set, or prop pieces are built and how special sound and lighting effects are produced – a fascinating look at the backstage world.
Behind-the-Scenes Tours
For a nominal per student fee, we offer behind-the-scenes tours and workshops for students. A Behind-the-Scenes Tour involves a visit to our wardrobe, prop and set shops, a bird’s eye-view from the lighting booth, and a chat with our staff about backstage action. You may book a “Tour for a Toonie” following afternoon shows ($2 per student).* Interactive Workshops are especially designed for your students and can be held onsite or at your school. We offer a wide variety of theatrical exploration including acting, prop-making, costume and set design, sound effects, playwriting and forum theatre workshops. Fees vary depending on class size, location, duration and content.

Subsidized Programs
Connections: Addressing the pattern of poverty
Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People is committed to making our productions and educational programmes accessible to all children, regardless of their socioeconomic background. Thanks to the generosity of CIBC World Markets Children’s Foundation, LKTYP offers special subsidized tickets to qualifying schools through Connections. Two components of this programme are Arts Impact and Wish List (see Book Class Trips).
Arts Impact: Making a difference in the lives of students
With the generous support of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life, schools in low-income areas of Toronto have the opportunity to participate in quality arts education. The objective of Arts Impact is to deepen students' understanding of theatre by providing pre-show and post-show workshops that delve into the content and the production aspects of LKTYP plays. The students are inspired by live performance and challenged to embrace new ideas and perceptions. This is an essential outreach program that makes theatre exciting and accessible.
